| MEDIA TIPS
Time and effort alone will not guarantee a successful
event. It is of the utmost importance to get the word out
to the various media outlets, such as radio, television, Internet,
magazines, newspapers, etc., or all your hard work researching,
writing and planning may be for naught. Through your local
media, you may inform the public of heritage holidays and/or
events and your planned projects, activities, events, etc.
(See the Action Kit on page 21 of issue #30 for ideas!)
Make Contact!
Send out Media Advisories and/or Press Releases to local media
informing the public of the who, what, where, when and why
of the heritage holiday and/or your event.
Know Your Stuff!
Make sure that you have covered all bases and know your information,
dates, etc. If you will be talking in person with a member
of the media, be sure that you are prepared – gather
all the relevant facts and stats ahead of time. Be specific
about your event and reinforce times, dates, and locations!
Before & After!
Before your event, send out a news release about the heritage
holiday and/or intended event. Be sure to include all the
necessary information such as: who is invited, how much it
costs (if anything), when, where, and don’t forget to
add why! After the heritage holiday and/or event, send out
another news release relating its success. Be sure to finish
your release with a mention of this annually recognized holiday/event.
Here, There, Everywhere!
News releases and media advisories are not the only form of
communication to get the heritage holiday and/or event promoted;
you can also write letters to the editor, articles for the
newspaper or local magazines, or scripts for public service
announcements!
Don’t be Late!
Be sure of any and all deadlines for submitting information
to the media. It would be rather disappointing to go to all
this work writing up an advisory or release to miss the boat!
